Pete Alonso hit two home runs, including a go-ahead two-run shot in the eighth, as Baltimore beat Toronto 4-3 on Monday night at Camden Yards.
Pete Alonso connected twice Monday night, and his two-run home run in the eighth inning sent the Baltimore Orioles to a 4-3 win over the Toronto Blue Jays. The slugger has 40 homers this season, reaching that total for the fourth time in his career, and trails Tampa Bay's Junior Caminero by one in the American League home run race. He also holds a nine-RBI edge over Houston's Yordan Alvarez.
Toronto struck for three runs in the opening frame on RBI singles from Nathan Lukes and George Springer. Gunnar Henderson answered with a solo shot in the sixth and finished the night a double short of the cycle. Alonso then took submariner Tyler Rogers deep in the eighth, becoming only the second right-handed batter to homer off him over the past two seasons.
Yennier Cano earned the win in relief for Baltimore, and Rico Garcia closed out a spotless ninth for his 10th save. The loss dropped Toronto 3 1/2 games behind the idle Chicago White Sox for the AL's final wild-card spot, while the Orioles remain on the brink of elimination in that race despite Alonso's strong first year with the club.
Blue Jays starter Trey Yesavage returned from the injured list, where knee inflammation had kept him out since early August. He lasted just two innings and surrendered Alonso's first-inning home run.
