Orioles Edge Blue Jays 4-3 on Alonso's Late Homer

Pete Alonso's second home run of the game, a two-run shot in the eighth off Tyler Rogers, lifted Baltimore past Toronto 4-3 on Sunday at Camden Yards.

The Baltimore Orioles beat the Toronto Blue Jays 4-3 on Sunday at Oriole Park at Camden Yards. Pete Alonso hit two home runs, including a two-run shot in the bottom of the eighth off reliever Tyler Rogers that decided the game. It was Alonso's fifth home run in his last six games.

Toronto scored all three of its runs in the first inning. Brett Bateman and Alejandro Kirk drew walks, Nathan Lukes singled in a run, George Springer added an RBI single, and Sean Keys hit a sacrifice fly. The Blue Jays managed only six hits in the game, all singles, with Springer collecting two.

The Blue Jays threatened again in the third, putting two runners on with no outs, but Keys flied out and Kazuma Okamoto grounded into a double play. Baltimore starter-opener Trey Yesavage allowed one run on Alonso's first homer with three strikeouts. Gunnar Henderson also homered for the Orioles.

Bateman left the game in the second inning after making an awkward catch on which his left knee hit the ground hard. He exited limping, and reports indicated no structural damage.

The teams are scheduled to meet again Monday, with Max Scherzer (3-8, 6.07 ERA) slated to face Chris Bassitt (8-5, 4.64 ERA) in a 6:30 p.m. Eastern start, weather permitting.
