Stewart Calls on Reese to Cover Her Fine After First Technical Since 2017

Breanna Stewart drew her first technical foul since 2017 while disputing a no-call during Atlanta's 95-84 win over the New York Liberty.

The Atlanta Dream defeated the New York Liberty 95-84 in a game marked by a heated exchange between Breanna Stewart and Angel Reese. With Atlanta ahead 88-80 and roughly two minutes remaining, Stewart drove to the basket but lost the ball under Reese's aggressive defense. Stewart objected to the lack of a call, and her complaints to the referee drew a technical foul.

After the game, Stewart said the foul stemmed entirely from the no-call, arguing that Reese had hit her hand rather than winning the ball cleanly. She added that she told Reese to her face that she should pay the fine. Teammate Sabrina Ionescu said that if Stewart was going to get her first technical since 2017, she would have expected a more animated display.

Reese finished with 18 points and 10 rebounds despite the loss, saying she learns from veterans like Stewart and Jonquel Jones while standing her ground. Stewart posted 27 points and 14 rebounds in the win.

The result means New York will not have home-court advantage in the first round of the playoffs. The two teams meet again on September 23.
