A season that began with optimism for the New York Giants took a sharp turn in a 28-6 loss to the Los Angeles Rams at SoFi Stadium. After opening the John Harbaugh era with a win over the Dallas Cowboys, in which second-year quarterback Jaxson Dart played nearly flawlessly and Malik Nabers looked sharp in his return from an ACL injury, New York saw several key players leave the game hurt.
Dart went down early in the second drive when he was hit by Rams pass rushers Byron Young and Josaiah Stewart on a third-down dropback. His knee hyperextended on the play, and though he walked off under his own power, the news could have been much worse.
General manager Joe Schoen told ESPN's Laura Rutledge that Dart is going to be OK. Ian Rapoport reported that the quarterback suffered a sprained MCL and is expected to miss some time. Harbaugh described the diagnosis as in the vicinity of an MCL sprain and not a devastating outcome, with further tests scheduled to determine how long Dart will be sidelined. Jameis Winston took over at quarterback and will lead the offense in the meantime.
Nabers dislocated his shoulder late in the first quarter after a hand battle with cornerback Trent McDuffie on an incomplete pass. He returned in the second quarter after popping the shoulder back in on the sideline, saying afterward that X-rays in the coming days will reveal the extent of the damage. He did not record another catch after returning.
The Giants also lost pass rusher Brian Burns to a left ankle injury in the fourth quarter while chasing Kyren Williams on an end around. Harbaugh said Burns is believed to have a low-ankle sprain rather than a high-ankle sprain, though Burns left the stadium in a walking boot.
