Indianapolis Colts wide receiver Alec Pierce is likely to miss several weeks while he rehabilitates a left heel injury he aggravated in Sunday night's loss to the Kansas City Chiefs, a source told the Indianapolis Star on Monday night.

Pierce is hoping to avoid a second surgery on his left leg, according to the report. He previously underwent a procedure in late March to address a bone issue that had been causing ankle pain.

The injury is a significant blow to the Indianapolis offense. Pierce signed a four-year, $114 million contract in March, and his ability to stretch the field is a rare skill in an era when defenses focus on eliminating big plays. He averaged 21.75 yards per catch on 84 receptions over the past two seasons.

To help cover the absence, the Colts are signing former New York Giants wide receiver Darius Slayton, who has familiarity with Indianapolis quarterback Daniel Jones from their time together with the Giants.
